Georgia M. Mills is a conductor, pianist, and maker of classical and contemporary music based in Rochester, NY.
In the 2020-2021 season, Georgia will conduct the New York premiere studio recording of Julia Wolfe’s Oxygen in collaboration with Carnegie Hall and will conduct Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus with the Rochester Summer Opera. Georgia will appear regularly with the Eastman Musica Nova Ensemble as Assistant Conductor and with OSSIA New Music as Vice President at the Eastman School of Music.
Since September 2019, Georgia has served as Assistant Conductor of the Eastman School of Music’s Musica Nova Ensemble under the direction of conductor Brad Lubman, and since August 2021, she has assisted with the Eastman Opera Theatre under direction of Music Director of Opera Timothy Long . Georgia currently studies conducting in the studio of Lubman, and previously with Joshua Gersen in the New York Youth Symphony Robert L. Poster Apprentice Conductor Program. Recent engagements include conducting Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus with the Rochester Summer Opera in August 2021, and upcoming engagements include conducting a New York premiere studio recording of Julia Wolfe’s Oxygen in collaboration with Carnegie Hall in October 2021.
As a pianist, Georgia trained formally in the studio Eduardus Halim at New York University’s Steinhardt School and Michael Adcock at the Washington Conservatory of Music. Georgia performs regularly with members of Musica Nova, OSSIA New Music, Eastman Percussion Ensemble, and Empire Film & Media Ensemble, and has recently performed with members of Ensemble Signal, Bang on a Can, Nief Norf, Khorikos, NYU Percussion Ensemble, and NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble. Georgia has been served fellowships in notable music festivals such as Bang on a Can Summer Festival, Nief Norf Summer Festival, NYU Pulsing & Shaking Festival, NYU Piano Institute and Interlochen Arts Camp.
Georgia has conducted and performed as a soloist, accompanist, and chamber pianist in venues such as Kodak Hall, Kilbourn Hall, and Hatch Hall at Eastman School of Music, the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery (MAG), the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), the University of Tennessee Knoxville, the University at Buffalo’s Slee Hall, New York University’s Frederick Loewe Theatre and Black Box Theater, Columbia University, the Washington Conservatory of Music, the Strathmore Mansion, the Washington National Opera Institute at the Kennedy Center, and the Washington National Cathedral. During her performance studies, Georgia was awarded master classes with pianists including Helénè Tysman, Simone Dinnerstein, Thérèse Fahy, Eteri Andjaparidze, Seymour Bernstein Fabio Gardenal, and Marilyn Nonken.
Georgia is a doctoral candidate in conducting at the Eastman School of Music and recently received her Master of Music degree in conducting. Georgia received a Master of Arts degree in music leadership at Eastman in 2019 and received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance at New York University. Georgia has held numerous artistic direction and arts administration positions; Music Director and Conductor of Rochester Summer Opera, Vice President of OSSIA New Music, Co-Artistic Director of Pulsing & Shaking Festival, Administrative Associate with The Knights orchestra in Brooklyn, Publicity Assistant for Dotdotdot Music, and Production Assistant with Metropolis Ensemble.
Georgia is Associate Professor of Orchestration at Roberts Wesleyan College and holds graduate teaching awards in conducting and music theory at Eastman School of Music.
