Georgia Markakis Mills
Georgia Markakis Mills is an American conductor, pianist, and maker of classical and contemporary music.
In the upcoming new year, Georgia will lead the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra in a concert featuring Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony and conduct the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra in a program of works by Stravinsky, Copland, Nardi, and Mozart. She will Guest Conduct a concert of works including Reich’s “Radio Rewrite” with Alarm Will Sound and lead workshops of premieres for the International Contemporary Ensemble.
Recent highlights include Guest Conductor of the Grossman Ensemble, Cover Conductor with the New York Philharmonic, Cover Conductor with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and Guest Conductor of Contemporaneous. In 2023, Georgia appeared as the Cover Conductor for the premiere of Dylan Mattingly’s Stranger Love presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Associate Music Director and Assistant Conductor for the premiere of Judd Greenstein’s opera A Marvelous Order with NOW Ensemble, and she led a lecture recital on micropolyphonic transformations in György Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto with Eastman Musica Nova. In 2022, Georgia conducted Nico Muhly’s world premiere ballet Third Bird, directed by Isaac Mizrahi and John Heginbotham, with Ensemble Signal in collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum’s Works & Process performing arts series and was Assistant Conductor for the premiere of George Lewis’ Tales of the Traveller with TIME:SPANS festival. Georgia conducted the premiere studio recording of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Julia Wolfe’s Oxygen presented by Carnegie Hall, and was Music Director of the Rochester Summer Opera’s 2021 production of Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY.
Georgia is a doctoral candidate in Conducting at the Eastman School of Music, where she has served as Assistant Conductor of the Musica Nova Ensemble under the direction of conductor Brad Lubman since 2019. She has additionally been Assistant Conductor of the Eastman Opera Theatre under direction of Music Director Timothy Long in staged productions of Kate Soper’s suite Here be Sirens and Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. Georgia has held numerous artistic direction and arts administration positions: Music Director and Conductor of Rochester Summer Opera, Vice President of OSSIA New Music, Co-Artistic Director of Pulsing & Shaking Festival, Administrative Associate with The Knights orchestra in Brooklyn, Publicity Assistant for Dotdotdot Music, and Production Assistant with Metropolis Ensemble.
Georgia is Adjunct Professor of Orchestration at Roberts Wesleyan University and holds graduate teaching awards in conducting and music theory at the Eastman School of Music.
